“I wanted to play ice hockey but destiny took me elsewhere”

He is an star of the Finnish Ballet and has a sensational talent that makes him a classical dancer suitable for any role, which he interprets in a masterly manner. His name is Michal Krcmar and for us it is an honor to host an artist appreciated all over the world.
Michal How did you get into dance?
“Thank you so much for your invitation. My mother discovered a talent for dance and musicality in very early age. When I was seven she took me to a ballet class to get the opinion of a professional instructor. The teacher advised me to try the exam at the state school in Prague after the first lesson."
Was it strange for a man to dance in your country at the time?
“Of course, it was very strange. Maybe it's a little bit better today, but still strange. I always wanted to be a professional athlete. I wanted to play ice hockey and soccer. But destiny took me elsewhere. Mainly for economic reasons. If a child practices these sports it is very expensive, but ballet in the 90's was almost free for kids."
What memories do you have of your periods of study?
“I continue to believe that the 8 years of national school were the most difficult period of my career so far. Especially the first four years of studying, for some reason I never really wanted to do ballet. I honestly don't know what kept me going. I was raised to never give up, that the word impossible doesn't exist. So I kept going. Something changed at the age of 15. I started doing shows and beautiful performances on stages and discovered the true purpose of my future profession. I found the passion and feeling of performing live again."
When did you dance your first role?
“For the first time in a full production I danced the Prince in 'Sleeping Beauty' when I was only 17. Thanks to the close collaboration of our school and the Czech National Ballet."
What role do you love to dance and why?
“I love dancing Basilio in 'Don Quixote' because I don't have to act and pretend who I am, I can truly be myself as if I were off stage. I also really like performing Spartacus, Onegin, Solor, Conrad... but Basilio is number one."
You are 'Principal' at the Helsinki Finnish Ballet. How do you feel this important charge inside you?
“The responsibility is huge because getting this honor and this position is one thing. But holding this rank for over ten years, training every day to be in my best shape is another thing, it's very difficult. It requires a lot of dedication, moving forward especially during the bad days, without stopping, without remorse, taking on this responsibility and trust every day as if it were the last moment of your career. So one day I can look back and be proud of what I did. That I was a good example not only as a dancer, an artist but above all as a human being."
Future projects?
“Nothing really worth mentioning. There are definitely some exciting shows coming, but I wouldn't want to 'spoil' them in case it doesn't work out. I prefer to focus on the present."
Dance for you in one word…
"Redemption".

Michal Krcmar: “Volevo giocare a hockey su ghiaccio ma il destino mi ha portato altrove”
E’ étoile del Finnish Ballet e dotato di un talento clamoroso che lo rendono un ballerino classico adatto a qualsiasi ruolo, che interpreta in maniera magistrale. Lui si chiama Michal Krcmar e per noi è un onore ospitare un artista apprezzato in tutto il mondo.
Michal Come ti sei avvicinato alla danza?
“Grazie mille per il vostro invito. Mia madre ha scoperto il talento per la danza e la musicalità quando ero molto piccolo. Quando avevo sette anni mi ha portato a una lezione di danza classica per sapere il parere di un insegnante di danza classica. L’insegnante mi ha consigliato di provare l’esame alla scuola statale a Praga dopo la prima lezione”.
Al tempo nel tuo Paese era strano che un uomo facesse danza?
“Certo, era molto strano. Forse è un po’ meglio oggi, ma comunque ancora strano. Ho sempre desiderato essere un atleta professionale. Volevo giocare a hockey su ghiaccio e calcio. Ma il destino mi ha portato altrove. Principalmente per ragioni economiche. Se un bambino pratica questi sport è molto costoso, ma il balletto negli anni ’90 era per i ragazzi quasi gratuito”.
Quali ricordi hai dei tuoi periodi di studi?
“Continuo a credere che gli 8 anni di scuola nazionale siano stati finora il periodo più difficile della mia carriera. Specialmente i primi quattro anni di studio, per qualche motivo non ho mai voluto veramente fare danza classica. Onestamente non so cosa mi abbia fatto andare avanti. Sono stato educato a non arrendermi mai, che la parola impossibile non esiste. Quindi ho continuato ad andare avanti. Qualcosa è cambiato all’età di 15 anni. Ho iniziato a fare spettacoli e belle esibizioni sui palcoscenici e ho scoperto il vero scopo del mio futuro mestiere. Ho ritrovato la passione e la sensazione di esibirmi dal vivo”.
Quando hai danzato il tuo primo ruolo?
“Per la prima volta in una produzione completa ho ballato il Principe in ‘La bella addormentata’ quando avevo solo 17 anni. Grazie alla stretta collaborazione della nostra scuola e del balletto nazionale ceco”.
Quale ruolo ami ballare e perché?
“Amo ballare Basilio in ‘Don Quijote’ perché non devo recitare e fingere il ruolo, posso essere veramente me stesso come se fossi fuori dal palco. Mi piace tantissimo fare anche Spartacus, Onegin, Solor, Conrad… ma Basilio è il numero uno”.
Sei ‘Principal’ al Balletto Finlandese di Helsinki. Come senti dentro te questa importante carica?
“La responsabilità è enorme perché ottenere questo onore e questa posizione è una cosa. Ma ricoprire questo grado per oltre dieci anni, allenarmi ogni giorno per essere nella mia forma migliore è un’altra cosa, è molto difficile. Richiede molta dedizione, andare avanti soprattutto durante i giorni brutti, senza fermarsi, senza rimorsi, prendersi ogni giorno questa responsabilità e fiducia come se fosse l’ ultimo momento di carriera. Così un giorno potrò guardarmi indietro ed essere orgoglioso per quello che ho fatto. Che sono stato un buon esempio non solo come ballerino, artista ma soprattutto come essere umano”.
Progetti futuri?
“Niente che valga veramente la pena menzionare. Sicuramente arriveranno alcuni spettacoli entusiasmanti, ma non vorrei ‘spoilerarli’ nel caso in cui non funzioni. Preferisco concentrarmi sul presente”.
La danza per te in una sola parola…
“Redenzione”.
