Under the masterful direction of Nina Ananiashvili, a world-renowned former prima ballerina with both the Bolshoi Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, the company has flourished, and their performance in London is no exception. Ananiashvili’s return to her homeland in 2004 marked the beginning of a new era for the State Ballet of Georgia, infusing the company with her own blend of passion, precision, and artistic innovation. This production of Swan Lake stands as a pinnacle of her vision, merging classical purity with contemporary sensibilities.

The ballet itself is a feast for the eyes and ears, combining Tchaikovsky’s timeless score with the intricate choreography that has made Swan Lake the most beloved ballet in the world. Staged for the company by Ananiashvili’s long-term dance partner, Alexei Fadeechev, this rendition is breathtaking. It features hand-painted backdrops created by the talented artisans at the Georgian Opera House’s workshops, along with nearly 100 costumes designed by theatrical legend Vyacheslav Okunev. The craftsmanship of these elements is remarkable, elevating the visual splendour of the production. The white tutus shimmer with an almost ethereal quality, and the lakeside and ballroom settings draw the audience deep into the fantasy world of this iconic ballet.

Based at the stunning Opera and Ballet State Theatre in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, this company of “versatile and accomplished” dancers (The New York Times) has soared under the bold artistic direction of world-renowned, Georgian-born Nina Ananiashvili, former prima ballerina with Bolshoi Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. Ananiashvili, considered one of the all-time greats, returned home to her native country in 2004 to lead the company. The company’s last visit to the UK was in 2008 where they performed at the Edinburgh International Festival
